The state of Denmark buys four elephants from circuses for €1.5 million
All political parties in the Danish parliament (Folketinget) have long wished to retire elephants from circuses for animal welfare reasons
The four elephants have been waiting more than a year for the process to come this far. The signing of the contract has brought them one step closer to their retirement. The elephants shall remain with the circuses until a final refuge has been selected and facilities built.
The selection process – a form of public tender – will open shortly through the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark.
